Biodiversity

Can we imagine a world without wildlife?

Nowadays, biodiversity conservation has become a challenge; biological diversity is becoming extinct at an accelerated rate. The planet has lost 60% of its species since 1970, currently the highest rate of extinction. Five mass extinctions have been documented in Earth's history and anthropogenic pressures are leading us to the sixth mass extinction. Given this concern for conservation, Cooperativa Salamá cares for, protects and conserves forest fragments within its farms.

One of the most important strategies to conserve the richness of wildlife inside and outside national protected areas is to maintain, protect and improve conservation areas within agroecosystems. A total of 237 flora species belonging to 74 families have been recorded on the farms. Among the flora species are: Carica papaya, Castilla elastica, Albizia adinocephala, Cordia alliodora, Inga oerstediana, Zamia standleyi, Merremia umbellata, Lantana cámara, Asclepia curassavica, among others.

Within the fauna monitoring, a species of anuran Rhinophrynus dorsalis was recorded, which is not officially distributed in the Colón area. Therefore, we consider it very important to continue monitoring and publishing data such as this to fill these gaps in information as a valuable contribution to the world of research.
